Shanta Ale Magar

Santa is a daughter of Kaji Bahadur Ale Magar, a farmer who lives in Janakpur, ward number 6.

By birth, Santa had a soft mass on her lumbar region (spine). She never complained about it and so it always went un-noticed for a long time.

When Santa was 7 years old, she started losing sensation on her left leg. Even a hard blow and a strong pinch went un-felt. And so, a small ignored cut on her left foot turned fatal one fine day.

The cut later turned septic and abscess accumulated all over it. Slowly Santa could no longer stand on her own. Walking became a major problem and her swollen leg troubled her much often. In a due course of time, Santa also suffered from uncontrolled urination.

Born and brought up in poor farmer's house, Santa had a difficult future ahead. Her father had to rear four other children. The family had no financial security and hence her father always hesitated to take Santa to any hospital.

Fortunately having learned about HRDC from one of the fellow villagers, Kaji Bahadur finally decided to take Santa for a quick check up. When she was brought to the hospital, her condition was diagnosed as Spina Bifida with a big trophic ulcer. Doctors suggested amputation. With below knee prosthesis, doctors assured her father that she'd be able to walk again.

Today, Santa is capable of walking on her own. She is currently with "Future of Nepalese Disabled Children in Need" where she is acquiring vocational training on tailoring. She has already mastered the art of tailoring and has expertise herself in 22 different items.

It is indeed HRDC's pleasure to have seen its patients living their life in utmost independence and confidence.
